December Adventure 2024

I'm logging my daily coding experiments for December Adventure in 2024 on this page.

I've switched gears completely and for the last few days I've been working on color squares, first on paper grids, and now scripted in some basic javascript.

Today I started learning about FM synth definitions in SuperCollider thanks to a five year old video on YouTube. The amount of historical info and tutorials available for SuperCollider is a wonderful resource to have available. Warning there's some pretty harsh tones in the video below.

I learned about the role of SuperCollider in norns, so I took a detour from the studies to learn more about SuperCollider. I watched "Tone to drone - Introduction to SuperCollider for monome norns" over at Music Hackspace. The course is run by Infinite Digits (no relation haha) and it's a fast paced overview of the basics of SuperCollider and how to use it in the norns environment. There was a lot to absorb here, but it felt like the right step to take currently.

An Anker Zolo power bank and JBL CLIP3 portable speaker combined with my little plastic-case norns shield are working nicely as a totally portable setup.

Today I went through the norns studies part 0. I used the REPL, and modified a copy of the firstlight.lua script. The whole process feels very familiar to me since I've already done very similar things back when I had a monome crow.

My norns shield has been living in a custom concrete enclosure for a while now. The concrete thing is great for being on my desk, but now I'd prefer portability - so I found this very old plastic box, drilled some holes and re-wired the norns into it. It looks ridiculous, but it's lighter and more portable. I might even be able to use it with a usb power bank.

I also took the opportunity to dig through my box of random knobs to find three somewhat low profile knobs. They don't match, but I like how they look and feel anyway.

So there was no coding today, but now I've setup my norns for grab-n-go so I can work with it without being tied to my desk.
